Design Developer

Become a valuable asset to the productive L&G team creating simple, elegant contemporary design pieces and experiences. The Red Hook-based studio has a dynamic, rigorous, but playful approach to design. Applicants should have an interest in participating in the independent design scene. This position shall provide input and support for new and existing product development and production optimization for both in-house and out-of-house products. This position will work collaboratively with all members of the team to realize designs that are thoughtfully considered, finely crafted, and efficiently produced. Given the small size of the team, this position incorporates industrial design, engineering and production management functions into an integrated approach that yields wholistically successful products and projects.

Position will work directly with L&G founders to:

Develop new products

  • Prototype and test ideas

  • Ideation support

  • Engineer solutions

  • 3D model

  • research materials and processes

  • source vendors

  • create technical drawings

  • create renderings for client review

  • optimize for production

  • research markets

Production optimization and management

  • manage vendor relationships

  • inventory and order parts

  • light in-house assembly of products

  • technical specification creation and updating

  • development of production management tools and documents

  • on-going improvement of existing products

  • provide technical support for sales/customer service team


Hard skills:

  • experience in industrial design and/or engineering

  • general metal and woodworking skills

  • 3D cad skills (Solidworks and Sketchup skills preferred)

  • Bachelor's degree (in Industrial Design or Engineering a plus)

  • drawing visualization ability

  • Microsoft Excel (ability to create sheets, utilize formula functions)

  • experience putting products into production

  • manufacturing knowledge (lighting, machining, metal work a plus)

Position to report and work directly with two founders of L&G as well as manage on-going relationships with outside vendors. This position may also include occasional management of assistants, contractors, and interns.

Salary and details:

Hourly rate or salary depending on experience and competencies. This position is full time and based out of Ladies & Gentlemen Studio's office in the Red Hook area of Brooklyn.
